Dede & Noel — An Intimate Cliffside Wedding in Santa Ana
The Grand Hilltop · Santa Ana, CA
Twenty people. Two cultures. One afternoon in Febrary that I'll think about for years.
Dede is Togolese and Nigerian. Noel is Jamaican. Their wedding was, from start to finish, a love letter to both lineages — and a reminder that intimate doesn't mean small. It means intentional.
The Ceremony
Dede entered accompanied by her father and brothers. The look on Noel's face when she turned the corner is something I replayed on my camera screen four times before moving on.
The Reception
If you've never eaten jollof alongside oxtail at a wedding, I am sorry for your life. Taste Thyme catered a menu that bridged both families' cuisines, and it was the kind of food that makes conversation impossible because everyone's too busy eating.
The dancing started early and didn't stop. At one point, nearly all twenty guests were on the floor at the same time. I put my camera down for a moment just to feel it.
A Note From Gerald
There is something about intimate weddings that full-scale productions can't replicate: the warmth of a room that knows everyone in it. Every guest at Dede and Noel's wedding was there because they mattered — and it showed. Photographing a celebration like this is a privilege, and I don't take it lightly.
